Four giant STS cranes arrive at Gemlik

Yilport has announced that its new container port in Gemlik (Turkey) has received four Super Post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes. The machines are expected to service their first container vessel in the first week of April.

Part of the Yildirim Group, Yilport already operates three ports in Turkey – Yilport Gebze (in Gebze), Gemport (in Gemlik), and RotaPort (in Körfez), all three on the coast of the Marmara Sea – as well as a port in Malta. It is developing a second port in Gemlik, which will be called Yilport Gemlik and is expected to be completed in April.

Manufactured by Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding (MES) in Japan, the gantry cranes took over 40 days to reach Turkey. They were shipped fully erect and the ship carrying them had to navigate around the southern tip of Africa, instead of taking the Suez Canal shortcut.

Yilport Gemlik has taken delivery of these four Paceco Portainers which have an outreach of 23 rows. They are the first batch of an order for eight such cranes built by MES. The other four machines will be delivered to the Gebze terminal (about 40km south east of Istanbul), whose expansion is expected to be completed in July. They represent a multi-million dollar investment.

Yilport says that it has sent Turkish technicians to Japan for training and that a crane simulator is used at Gemport to develop the skills of local drivers.
