Felixstowe introduces electric RTGs

Hutchison Ports (UK) today announced that Kalmar has electrified four Rubber-Tyred Gantry cranes (RTGs) at its container port in Felixstowe, England.

The four machines, originally manufactured by ZPMC in Shanghai, have been converted from diesel to electric primary drive. The project, described as the first of its kind in Western Europe, was undertaken by Kalmar, part of Finnish manufacturer Cargotec.

Hutchison Ports (UK) expects each crane to deliver energy savings of at least 45% compared with conventional diesel machines.

“The greener machines are the latest in a programme of measures which has seen carbon emissions at the port cut by 12% since 2007, keeping us on course to achieving a target reduction of 30% by 2017,” said Paul Davey, head of Corporate Affairs.

As part of the conversion project, electrical infrastructure was installed along the 217 metre length of two RTG container storage blocks. The cranes were equipped with an automatic drive-in collector unit to connect to the electric supply, and with conductor bars to supply power to the electric motors. They were also fitted with new operator controls.

Hutchison Ports (UK) says that the design allows RTGs to move between storage blocks, thus retaining the flexibility advantage of RTGs over rail-mounted alternatives.
