Bilbao wants to take trade from Poland-Spain lorries

UniportBilbao today announced that a Basque delegation is to visit Poland next week to promote the port located on the northern coast of Spain.

Last year, the port of Bilbao handled 126,000 tonnes of goods being shipped to and from Poland. Uniport says that this throughput has huge growth potential, considering the important trade by road between Spain and Poland.

A 45-foot “high cube” container provides the same capacity as a lorry, notes the port, reminding shippers that lorries are submitted to traffic restrictions in the weekend and will have to pay a French eco-tax from January 1st 2014. It adds that Bilbao’s intermodal facilities allow for “door-to-door” services at prices which are not subject to seasonal variations and which it says are competitive compared to the road option.

The Basque port says that it has the equipment to load and unload any kind of products. The goods it exchanges with the Polish ports of Gdynia, Gdansk and Szczecin comprise chemical products, machinery, fodder, scrap metals, tinned food and wine.

The Basque delegation will visit Poland October 6th-9th. It will include representatives from UniportBilbao, the Bilbao Port Authority, Agemasa terminal, Agencia Maritima Artiach Zuazaga, Consignaciones Toro y Betolaza, Erhardt Proyectos, MacAndrews, Maritima Transoceanica (Matransa), Sparber Group, and Vasco Catalana Group.
