APM Terminals purchases Mediterranean reefer container terminal

Global port operator APM Terminals has announced its acquisition of the largest reefer terminal in the Mediterranean after purchasing the Vado Ligure Reefer Terminal in Italy from GF Group .

“The integration of the Vado Reefer Terminal with our new, future semi-automated container terminal enhances the logistics options for businesses and the shipping lines calling the Ligurian coast, serving all of Northern Italy and beyond,” Carlo Merli, chief executive of APM Terminals Vado said.

The acquisition saw APM Terminals purchase a 100% stake in Reefer Terminal S.p.A. which operates the Vado Ligure facility on the Ligurian coast. The site is close to APM Terminals’ proposed Vado port project which is due to open in January 2018 and will have 800,000 TEU annual capacity.

“We are delighted to hand over the baton to a key operator like APM Terminals,” Raffaella Orsero, president of GF Group commented. “This sale represents a further step in the process of refocusing on our historical business of import and distribution of fruit and vegetable produce. We will however remain a Reefer Terminal customer with our weekly Central American service, operated with four GF Group owned refrigerated vessels.”

The Vado port will have a draught of 17 metres and will be the first major new container facility to be built in Italy in decades. The Vado Reefer Terminal is expected to play a key role in attracting shipping lines as the Ligurian coast is a major entry point for refrigerated palletized fresh fruit into Northern Italy.

“We are building Italy’s port of the future with ideal access to Turin and Northern Italy manufacturing zones as well as consumer markets. Equally important, we will have the best port system and product in the market capable of serving container vessels, reefer vessels, RoRo and breakbulk vessels,” Merli added.

The terminal itself has four rail tracks linked to an off-dock rail facility, allowing  direct access to interior destinations through intermodal rail service.

“We are excited to introduce a new, better way to serve global supply chains with our reefer terminal and its ideal fit with our deepwater container terminal. The APM Terminals Vado facility will be the only port in Italy able to handle Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCS) of over 18,000 TEU capacity when it opens in January 2018” Merli explained.

APMT divests Medcenter Container Terminal stake

Alongside the investement in Vado Ligure the company also announced that it has divested its 33% ownership interest in the Medcenter Container Terminal in Gioia Tauro, Italy.

The stake was purchased by a consortium consisting of Contship Italia Group and Terminal Investment Limited which are now the majority owners.
