Aqaba completes $140 million berth expansion

The Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) has inaugurated its $140 million berth extension, APM Terminals announced yesterday.

The addition of 460 metres of quay to the existing 540 metres has doubled the capacity of the Jordanian port on the Red Sea.

ACT handled 817,000 TEUs in 2012. With its new total quay length of 1km, it will now be able to accommodate an annual throughput of 1.5 million TEUs.

The berth extension was inaugurated on October 24th in the presence of Jordan’s King Abdullah II.

It was the last phase of a terminal expansion programme initiated in 2009 which has included the delivery of two new ship-to-shore gantry cranes with a 22-container row reach, and four rubber-tyred gantry cranes.

ACT is a joint venture between the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC, the Jordanian government's development arm for the Aqaba Special Economic Zone) and APM Terminals, which manages the facility under a contract running through 2031.

The terminal has seen its throughput increase by an annual average of 16% over the past three years and its productivity level reach 33 gross moves per hour. Thirteen shipping lines now call on a weekly basis at ACT, where water depth ranges from 14.5 to 22 metres.

A direct rail access is planned for Iraq.
