Port of Maputo launches tender for dredging work

Authorities at Mozambique’s Port of Maputo have launched a tender process to select a company to expand the access channel at the port and allow vessels with draughts of up to 14.5 metres.

“Dredging the access channel to the port is a strategic decision which not only will allow the Port of Maputo to achieve its goal to handle 40 million tons by 2020, but will have a multiplying effect on the Mozambican economy”, Osório Lucas, chief executive of the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) said.

The dredging work will increase the channle depth from the current 11 metres and allow ships of up to 80.000 dead weight tonnes to access the port. It follows two years of investment under the MPDC’s port development masterplan.

“We are confident that this investment will attract more cargo, thus creating more jobs, developing more PME’s whose business is associated to the port, creating the need for more infrastructure developments and increase our contribution for Mozambique’s GDP.”

In total the MPDC estimates that the port will receive $3 billion in investment by 2020, as wella s investment to improve rail links to the port. Rail operator Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique alone plans to invest $1 million in infrastructure and rolling stock to replace current road link sto the port with new rail infrastructure.
